Highly integrated PFC-SPM™ device targets 3-6kW motor drive applications
-
Smart Power Modules simplify designs and increase reliability
|
San Jose, California − June 5, 2007 − Fairchild Semiconductor’s (NYSE:
FCS) PFC-SPM products received a “Power Device Product Award 2006” from
Electronic Design & Application World-Nikkei Electronics China (EDAW-NEC).
Fairchild’s PFC-SPM devices are designed for full-switching power factor
correction (PFC) in motor drive applications in the 3-6kW power range and
offer an energy-efficient, compact solution. Fairchild’s PFC-SPM products were
selected as winners by China’s major industry publication because they:
- Reduce layout parameters, increase inverter stability, simplify design and
shorten the development cycle time due to a high level of integration.
- Increase reliability by offering under-voltage (UV) and over-current (OC)
protection. - Offer full functionality by incorporating temperature
monitoring and current sensing. - Provide power-saving features that
are expected to be widely adopted by end-users.
Fairchild’s PFC-SPM devices, the
FPDB20PH60, FPDB30PH60 and
FPDB50PH60, offer designers a compact “green” solution ideal for air
conditioners and industrial inverter designs by increasing system reliability
and efficiency while reducing board space. Each PFC-SPM device integrates two
fast-recovery diodes, two freewheeling diodes, two IGBTs, a gate-driver IC, a
shunt resistor and a thermistor into one thermally efficient 44mm x 26.8mm
package. These highly integrated modules save 50 percent board space compared
to discrete solutions and increase reliability with built-in protection
features. They also provide 99 percent power factor (typical) to meet the
mandatory PFC standard (IEC61000-3-2) and 40kHz switching operation to
mitigate power loss.
The PFC-SPM modules contain power devices in innovative packaging techniques
that provide the bridgeless active PFC topology in an energy-efficient
package. This bridgeless topology affords a more efficient PFC circuit as
compared to the conventional rectifier bridge plus boost converter approach.
Other PFC module products typically use a conventional bridge rectifier, boost
switch IGBT or MOSFET and boost diode. By utilizing the bridgeless topology,
a reduction in the number of diodes in series with the power path is realized,
which reduces conduction losses and provides a more efficient circuit. Each
PFC-SPM device also includes a gate driver and temperature monitoring NTC
resistor.
Fairchild’s PFC-SPM products are packaged in Direct Bonded Copper (DBC)-based
transfer-molded packaging technology. DBC is a construction technique
providing excellent electrical isolation and thermal interface between the
module’s power semiconductors and its external thermal interface.
SPM® Products
In addition to the award-winning PFC-SPM
devices, Fairchild Semiconductor offers a full line of highly integrated Smart
Power Modules that provide efficient motor control targeting a wide range of
energy-restricted applications.
Motion-SPM™ products provide complete adjustable-speed motor drive control and
fully integrated circuit protection for ac motors found in appliance
applications such as washing machines, air conditioners, refrigerators and
sewing machines. Compared to discrete IGBT solutions, Fairchild’s integrated
Motion-SPM devices require less than half the board space while providing
low-voltage control and a high-voltage output stage rated at 10~30A at 220Vac.
Motion-SPM products are available in DIP, Mini-DIP and Tiny-DIP packages.
SRM-SPM products are the industry’s first Smart Power Modules designed
specifically for driving single-phase switched reluctance motors (SRM) for
vacuum cleaners. Integrating a high-voltage IC (HVIC) and low-voltage IC
(LVIC), IGBTs, fast recovery diodes and a thermistor in an ultra-compact (44mm
x 26.8mm) Mini-DIP package with Direct Bonded Copper (DBC) technology, these
products offer significantly increased thermal performance. This compact
solution reduces power circuit space by up to 40 percent, greatly reducing
overall system size while simultaneously enhancing reliability.
