FAN5350 in WLCSP Package Enables the Smallest Footprint Designs while
Achieving 94 Percent Efficiency in Portable Applications
|
San Jose, California – December 27, 2007 – Fairchild Semiconductor’s
(NYSE: FCS) FAN5350 has been named a Hot 100
Product of 2007 by EDN Magazine in the power semiconductors and IC
category. This revolutionary 3MHz/600mA DC/DC synchronous buck converter
features 16µA quiescent current, 20mV transient response and low-voltage
ripple. The FAN5350 is designed to power DSP core processors, application
processors and I/O interfaces, and utilizes Fairchild’s proprietary new
ultra-fast architecture specifically designed to simultaneously provide
industry-leading quiescent current and transient-response performance. This
high-performance, compact converter enables designers to meet next-generation
load requirements while preserving battery life and saving board space in cell
phones, media players, GPS devices, Bluetooth headsets and other single-cell
2.7V to 5.5V lithium-ion-powered portable applications.
“Fairchild’s FAN5350 datasheet
shows an input voltage or 2.7 to 5.5 volts and has a 1.82 volt fixed output,”
commented Paul Rako, EDN’s technical editor, in his July 2, 2007
blog. “What is remarkable about this part is the 16 microampere quiescent
current while it operates at 3 MHz. The transient response is 20mV to a 300 mA
load step. It is these kind of remarkable specs that make me wonder if the
analog folks are going to make life pretty difficult for the digital power
crowd. In addition the part can get up to 94 percent efficiency. Some
companies play a game where they spec efficiency with an inductor the size of
a fist, but Fairchild mentions that you can still get over 90 percent
efficiency using a 1 uH chip inductor. Bravo.”
Products selected for EDN’s annual Hot 100 Products issue are
chosen by its editors from the hundreds of newsworthy items that appear in the
pages of EDN in print or online. Eligible products must have appeared in EDN
during the year and could have been featured in EDN’s New
Products section, a feature story, or an online exclusive.
EDN Editorial Director Maury Wright stated, “Our editorial team covers
new product introductions on a daily basis and we see a lot of worthy
products. We look back once a year and choose the introductions that we
believe will have the greatest significance to the design engineer and create
the Hot 100 list.”
