Fairchild Semiconductor's TinyBuck™ DC – DC Buck Regulator, Wins EDAW-Nikkei Electronics China's "Best Innovative Product Award" for 2007

FAN2106 is the Industry's Smallest, Fully Integrated 6A, 24V-input Synchronous Buck Regulator

San Jose, California – April 3, 2008 – Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS), the leading global supplier of high performance products that drive energy-efficiency, has received a leading product award in the prestigious “Power Device Product Awards 2007” from Electronic Design & Application World – Nikkei Electronics China (EDAW – NEC). Fairchild’s FAN2106 was chosen as a winner in the highly competitive “Best Innovative DC-DC Converter Product 2007.” This TinyBuck product is the first in a new series of all-in-one regulators, offering up to 95 percent efficiency and improving system thermal performance while simplifying designs.

Fairchild’s FAN2106 integrates an advanced analog IC, MOSFETs and a boot diode into an ultra-compact molded leadless package (MLP). Measuring only 5mm x 6mm, this product is the industry’s smallest 6A, 24V-input, integrated synchronous buck regulator on the market today. This highly integrated low-profile, small-footprint device occupies approximately 50 percent less board space than discrete solutions and facilitates greater design flexibility. Furthermore, the FAN2106 achieves up to 95 percent power efficiency by converting input voltages of 3V through 24V to output voltages as low as 0.8V while delivering up to 6A of output current. This compact, easy-to-use, high-efficiency regulator is ideal in a broad range of point-of-load (POL) applications including set-top boxes, cable modems, in-cabin GPSs, portable medical equipment, LED lighting, industrial instrumentation as well as ultra-mobile PCs, notebooks and blade servers.

Key features of the FAN2106 include:

  • Wide input range: 3V to 24V.
  • Highly integrated module replaces one buck controller, two gate drivers and two MOSFETs.
  • Saves 50 percent voltage-regulator real estate because TinyBuck’s MLP package is smaller than two SOIC packages.
  • Integrated boot diode minimizes board space.
  • Programmable switching-frequency feature provides design flexibility.
  • Under-voltage, over-voltage, over-current and thermal protection circuitry increases reliability.
