FAN6961 − Boundary Mode PFC Controller

The FAN6961 is an 8-pin, boundary-mode, PFC controller IC intended for controlling PFC pre-regulators. The FAN6961 provides a controlled on-time to regulate the output DC voltage and achieve natural power factor correction. The maximum on-time of the external switch is programmable to ensure safe operation during AC brownouts. An innovative multi-vector error amplifier is built in to provide rapid transient response and precise output voltage clamping. A built-in circuit disables the controller if the output feedback loop is opened. The startup current is lower than 20µA and the operating current has been reduced to under 6mA. The supply voltage can be up to 25V, maximizing application flexibility.

A High Power Factor Flyback with Constant-Current Output for LED Lighting Applications
This article explains the principles of AC/DC converters in flyback topology having a high power factor input and a constant current output. The most commonly used mode of operation for this purpose is boundary conduction mode (BCM). The basics of this mode are developed and its drawbacks are made clear. A simple method for improving power factor is introduced and explained in detail. Operating in DCM mode improves power factor and THD while reducing the peak drain voltage. A quick design example is given and the special issues of driving high power LEDs are explained.
