580 million mobile phones are projected to be built in 2004, each of these phones require a SMPS for recharging. In typical use the power supply is left connected to the AC line while not in use. During this no-load or standby time a traditional SMPS will consume Watts of power. This no-load energy when multiplied by the number of phones and hours in standby add up to Megawatts of wasted energy. Fairchild has designed Green FPS with burst mode operation which can reduce the standby power to less than 1W.
