Power Factor Correction-Smart Power Module (PFC-SPM™) - Offering a Strong Advantage for 1-3 kW Air Conditioners

Fairchild's PFC-SPM is the industry's first smart power module for partial power factor correction switching converters in applications such as 1-3 kW air conditioners. This module integrates four rectifier diodes, two IGBTs, a gate-driving IC and a thermistor in a single and thermally efficient compact package (44 mm X 26.8 mm). Because these ICs are integrated into one module, they offer customers easy design-in, less assembly time and improve overall system reliability. The FSAB20PH60's substrate package is identical in size and configuration to the actual motor control (motion-SPM) module. These two modules are designed so that they can be mounted side-by-side to share a single heat sink, which simplifies design and enables easy assembly. With the increasingly stringent agency and governmental regulations on consumer appliances, Fairchild's PFC-SPM offers a strong advantage by lowering switching losses and improving EMI to easily comply with these regulations. In fact, the PFC-SPM was designed to meet harmonic current regulations such as the PFC standard IEC61000-3-2.
