Smart meters represent an essential technology in support of smart grid initiatives to improve efficiency through a flexible and intelligent energy-distribution network. Smart meters provide a real-time communication link to the  utility and to local appliances and devices within the premise. This communication provides real-time measurement and control that enables end-user energy management and advanced billing models such as Time of Use and Demand Reduction. The incorporation of Feed In Tariffs from locally-generated solar and other alternative energy sources facilitates a model of distributed power generation. These new functions will reduce carbon emissions, make power delivery more reliable and reduce costs for the customer as well as the utility.
